Best Protune Lessons

Protune is an important tool for getting the best possible footage. In this article we will provide a GoPro Protune tutorial that will teach you how to quickly implement this powerful tool into your filming.

With Protune users are able to get much higher quality throughout their post-production workflow. Since its inception during the Hero2 times, Protune has changed several times. Today this can be activated within the GoPro settings and it becomes the standard for almost all GoPro’s. The main purpose of this software update is to help users to achieve more dynamic images from their camera. Experienced GoProers always use Protune because it allows them to make the best of their footage.

If you want to record Protune footage, turn on Protune in your camera’s settings menu. In order to work with Protune footage in GoPro Studio:

1. Import and convert Protune footage
2. Edit and check that converted clip has automatically applied the Protune preset. In the right hand controls you can adjust the split point slider to see what the footage looks like with the neutral color profile. If you want to adjust the color settings yourself you can can clear the automatically applied Protune preset in the Presets controls.

GoPro Tips & Tutorials

Here are several benefits of Protune:

· Increased Bitrate - Switching to Protune from standard video mode increases the bitrate from 25mb/s to 35mb/s. This way, users can achieve better overall image quality as they capture more data per second while filming. You can record video in cinema-quality of 24fps and then easily intercut GoPro content with other source media without any need for fps conversion.

· Neutral Color Profile - Protune extends the flexibility into post-production. When Protune is active the Color Profile is giving us a more neutral base to start from. The more neutral is the color profile, the greater flexibility users have in color matching clips taken at different time.

· White Balance & CAMRAW – This is useful for the users of DSLR’s. The color temperature of your video can be balanced in order to find true white. White Balance is automatic by default but with Protune users can manually fine tune it.

· ISO Settings – ISO addition comes with the Hero 4. This measures the sensitivity of our image sensor to light and it has 3 ISO options in Hero 4: 400, 1600, and 6400. · Sharpness – There are three different sharpness modes in GoPro: Low, Medium, and High.

· Exposure – This refers to the video brightness and it can be affected by Aperture, Frame Rate, and natural light. Manual exposure corrections ensure the we are using the right exposure for the desired video brightness.

· High-Quality Image Capture – by using Protune's high data rate users can capture images with less compression. That ensures higher quality for professional productions.

· Neutral Color - During the post-production color correction Protune's neutral color profile provides more flexibility. Protune's log curve allows capturing more detail in highlights and shadows.

· Film/TV Frame Rate Standard - Turning Protune ON is affecting several features and settings, such as fps, simultaneous video and photo, video resolution, and FOV.

· Protune is compatible with GoPro Studio and other editing programs and professional color correction tools.

Learning to Use Protune

In order to get a proper feel for Protune, it’s a good idea to compare with your own footage. This way you’ll be able to clearly see how much of an advantage gives Protune.

In order to compare use a side by side shot.
- Film a shot in 1080p at 30 fps, then turn on the “capture settings” in Protune and film the same shot. Upload the GoPro Studio after you film both shots. Make color correction’s to the Protune clip and you’ll see the real advantage of using Protune over GoPro’s color profile. This is especially useful if you want to mix in footage from another camera.

Protune Configurations:
Increased bit rate: no corrections
Protune ON : Sharpness, High GoPro Color, WB Auto

This is a great configuration in case that you need the increased bit rate without added editing time. Set the color to flat if you prefer the flexibility of a neutral color profile.

Increased bit rate: Quick edits, Protune on Sharpness, medium Flat color, WB Auto

Medium sharpness is great if you find the typically automatically set high contrast to be too much.

Wide open: GoPro Raw, Protune on, ISO Set, WB
· Sharpness low
· Flat

You can start by setting the ISO, then set the WB. The rest of settings are up to you during the editing stage.

Starting with HERO3+ Black Edition version there are advanced Protune controls for ISO Limit, Color, Exposure, and Sharpness.
